ISO 14001 Environmental Standard

SRI is Among the First Approved for ISO 14001:2015

Continuing to be a global leader, SRI is one of the first registrars approved by ANAB for ISO 14001:2015. Committed to your success, SRI stands ready to assist you through the process.

Current Status of ISO 14001

In September 2015, the International Organization for Standardization released ISO 14001:2015.

The most significant change to ISO 14001:2015 is the move to an annex SL structure. This structure is based on ten sections. The current version, ISO 14001:2015, released September 15, 2015, focuses more on harmonization with other ISO standards than introduction of significant changes to the requirements. The annex SL structure is the basis of the harmonization, as all ISO management system standards will move towards the same 10 sections and will share approximately 30% of the same requirements. Organizations using multiple management systems (e.g. Quality and Environmental) will benefit, as integration of these systems is far less complicated. In addition, organizations that integrate two or more systems will enjoy a cost reduction up to 20%, depending on the degree of integration.

Achieving Your Environmental and Economic Goals

ISO 14001 is an international standard for Environmental Management Systems (EMS). It is intended to provide your organization with the elements of an effective environmental management system which can be integrated with other management system requirements.

ISO 14001:2015 has ten sections. Three sections are general information for your company about the standard and are not auditable. Certification focuses on the seven key auditable sections:
  • Context of the Organization
  • Leadership
  • Planning
  • Support
  • Operation
  • Performance Evaluation
  • Improvement

In conjunction with any new releases of the standard, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) sets an expiration date for the current version. Organizations with existing ISO 14001:2004 certificates will have three years, from the date of the publication of ISO 14001:2015, to transition to the new standard. You are able to renew your ISO 14001:2004 certificate during the three year transition period, but the expiry date of the certificate cannot exceed the date that ISO 14001:2004 becomes obsolete. Take these dates into account when planning any future implementation and registration of your QMS. You may purchase a copy of the revised standard at www.ansi.org and get any future updates.

The most economical approach is to plan your audit well in advance. The more time you have to implement the QMS and conduct the first series of internal audits and management reviews, the more time you will have to adjust and improve your QMS operations. Hurried implementations do not necessarily save time if many nonconformances result. A well planned and implemented QMS adds the most value to your business.

Contact SRI to plan your transition to the new standard. All of SRI's ISO 9001 qualified auditors have been trained to the new standard and are ready to help. If you need training, our training organization has courses scheduled now. The SRI team is ready to help!
